Speaking the Truth in Love in Worship
Ephesians 4:15
Worship ministry rises or falls on more than talent. It rises or falls on how people treat each other.
Ephesians 4:15 calls us to speak the truth in love. Both matter. Truth without love can discourage. Love without truth can keep people from growing. God calls us to hold both together. When we are praying about when and what to say we should: THINK
THINK
Is it True?
Is it Helpful?
Does it Inspire?
Is it Necessary?
Is it Kind?
If it does not pass that filter, it likely does not need to be said in that moment. It may be a good time to step back.
Our worship team had a strange rehearsal. Missed cues, wrong notes, it was rough. Now, it can be corrected harshly, or it can be handled with patience and encouragement. One approach shuts people down. The other builds them up while still helping them improve. Our Worship team laughs at one another's mistakes because we know we are all human. What did we do? We went back to a heart of worship. We stopped trying to hammer out parts and just worshiped. In that moment the Holy Spirit just changed the atmosphere.
Most people want to do their best. When they are encouraged and led with kindness, they rise. When the atmosphere is right, correction strengthens instead of discourages.
And sometimes the best response is to say nothing at all and let the Holy Spirit do what words cannot.
This is not just about improving worship. It is about becoming more like Christ. I encourage you as I encourage myself to “THINK” before you engage your tongue. I encourage you to read James 3.
